Knife-wielding kidnapper shot dead on Beijing street

A young man who took a woman and a small girl hostage at knifepoint was shot dead by Beijing police yesterday evening.
The man held the two hostages at 5:48pm yesterday on a road in Chaoyang District, police said.
As negotiation failed and the agitated kidnapper threatened to hurt the hostages, police sniper opened fire and the man was killed on the spot, Beijing Times reported today.
The hostages were saved unscathed and sent to a hospital for observation.
Beijing police said the man was from Henan Province and his motive is under investigation.
