Knives out for 'vulgar' TV show
A CHINESE political adviser has suggested China Central Television stop its annual fundraiser -- the Spring Festival Gala -- because the program has been taking insulting pot shots at disadvantaged people.
Liu Zepeng said the show is a bad influence on the public. He pinpointed to a program in 2010's gala by a veteran comedian Huang Hong that made fun of an ugly woman's different experience before and after plastic surgery.
Huang described the wife before the surgery as "ugly enough to scare ghosts away."
Liu said the 20-year-old gala is using more and more vulgar content making fun of the disadvantaged people to attract cold-blooded laughter. He said it deserved to be yanked, the Beijing Times said.
His comments were applauded by artist members of the National People's Political Consultative Conference.
