Koreans Evacuated
MORE than 5,000 people have been evacuated from a North Korean city bordering China after flooding.
North Korea's KCNA news agency said yesterday many parts of Sin'uiju City had been submerged after Yalu River, or Amnok as it is known in Korean, overflowed due to high water levels in rivers between North Korea and China.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il sent military units to rescue residents in the northwestern area and air force planes and navy warships evacuated at least 5,150 flood victims, KCNA said.
Lack of proper infrastructure outside the capital Pyongyang makes arable land and residential districts particularly vulnerable to water damage.
