Kung fu kick starts college careers
MOST top performers in the national college entrance exam in a central China city were not geeks at all 鈥 but trained kung fu artists, according to the education authority.
But these alleged martial artists can barely fight. Instead, their high schools in Loudi City, Hunan Province lured them into paying 20,000 yuan (US$2,949) each to get kung fu training by promising 20 extra marks in the all-important test, China Youth Daily reported today.
Most of those who paid got the extra marks. In Loudi No.1 High School, its top 12 scorers all got the extra marks. Thirty-one students got the extra marks in Loudi No.3 High School. The schools also provide a full refund if the scheme did not work out.
The situation sparked uproar that the education authority is turning the serious test into a game for the rich.
"Everybody knows the money was not for the training, but paid to buy the extra marks," the report quoted an unnamed test taker as saying. "That's not fair for those who can't afford it."
The students got only a few hours of kung fu training every week and they got the extra marks because they won in provincial contests, the report said.
