Kunming airport collapse injures 11

Eleven people were injured when an airport underpass collapsed in southwest Yunnan Province yesterday evening, Xinhua News Agency reported.

All of the injured are construction workers who were placing concrete in the cargo vehicle underpass at the Xiaoshao International Airport of Kunming, the provincial capital, at about 7pm.

Three of the workers suffered serious crush injuries, while the rest were discharged from hospital after having their injuries treated, Kunming police said early this morning.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Air traffic at the airport remains unaffected, according to local media.

Situated on the east side of Kunming, Xiaoshao International Airport is currently undergoing reconstruction to gear itself up to become China's fourth largest air traffic hub.

A similar collapse occurred on January 3, 2010, killing seven people and injuring another 34.
