Labor dispute turned violent, 37 workers injured
NEARLY 2,000 migrant workers, hired to build a large wholesale market in Wuhan, capital of central Hubei Province, did not get their pays and 37 of them were wounded by armed guards led by the developer.
Nine workers were seriously injured in the violent confrontation on Wednesday, the Yangtze Morning Post reported today.
The developer of the Xiaguo Fruit Wholesale Market in the city's Hongshan District suddenly terminated his contract with the project contractor last Friday and refused to pay the 20 million yuan (US$3.15 million) labor cost to the migrant workers hired by the contractor.
The report said the developer wanted to give the contract to another construction company. After the fighting incident, the developer promised to pay part of the workers' wages.
