Labor survey to launch

A LABOR force survey will be launched in the country's four municipalities and more than 20 provincial capitals this year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Inspectors across the country will choose people above the age of 16 and collect their education, employment status, and other information.

"China is in need of an accurate and timely labor database to help the government make employment policies," said NBS Director Ma Jiantang on Friday.

The unemployment rate is released quarterly by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. It only covers urban residents who have registered at labor departments.

The registered urban unemployment rate climbed to 4.2 percent at the end of last year from 4 percent in 2007, according to the ministry.

Analysts believed the actual figure was worse as 20 million migrant workers have lost their jobs amid the economic slowdown and more than 6 million college students are soon to enter the job market.
