Lai Changxing sentenced to life for smuggling, bribery
Lai Changxing, a smuggling kingpin in coastal Fujian Province and fugitive in Canada for 12 years until he was extradited to China last July, is sentenced to life imprisonment today.
The Xiamen City Intermediate People's Court in Fujian also deprived the 53-year-old convict of his political rights for life and confiscated all his personal assets, the Xinhua News Agency reported today.
The court found Lai's company evaded import taxes totaling nearly 14 billion yuan. Lai and his company also bribed 64 government officials with 39.12 million yuan.
Lai was handed over to China by Canada last July after a lengthy legal battle. He was formally charged in February this year with "masterminding a criminal ring engaged in smuggling and bribery."
Lai stood in an open trial in April and he was accused of running a multi-billion-yuan smuggling operation of an unprecedented scale in the 1990s in the port city of Xiamen.
