Laibin bus hijack suspect shot dead

A man suspected of killing a woman during a scuffle at a market was shot dead yesterday in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after hijacking a bus with eight passengers on board, police said.

Police received a report that a fight at a market in the city of Laibin around 10:30am had resulted in a woman's death, a spokesman with the Laibin Public Security Bureau said.

The suspect hijacked the bus with a knife to flee the police at the market and forced it to pass a highway toll gate near the city of Liujiang. He was confronted and shot dead by police about 1:30pm, the spokesman said.

No one else was harmed during the confrontation, and police are continuing to investigate the incident.
