Land chief charged for taking17m yuan

PROSECUTORS in eastern China's Anhui Province have charged a former land and resources bureau chief with taking 17 million yuan (US$2.49 million) in bribes.
Wang Haifeng, who had been the head of Ma'anshan Land and Resources Bureau since August 2001, was arrested on January 24, Procuratorial Daily reported on Sunday.
Wang was head of the city's Huashan District from October 1995 to 2001.
The 55-year-old took his first bribe in 1999, according to the indictment, and received 17 million yuan in cash, property and luxuries over 10 years.
Most of the 40 people who paid bribes were property developers or mining bosses, who Wang helped gain unlawful profits from land deals.
The prosecutors said Wang also borrowed 2 million yuan from a mining boss but refused to repay the money.
