Land dispute protest chaos in Guangdong

DOZENS of police officers were injured and six police cars were smashed after a protest over land disputes in a southern China city turned violent.

Several hundred villagers of Lufeng City, Guangdong Province, gathered to lodge complaints over land disputes at the construction site of an industrial park on Wednesday morning, the propaganda department of Lufeng government said in a public statement.

The angry villagers attacked restaurants, the construction site and a knitting factory, while women, children and seniors gathered in main thoroughfares to block traffic, Guangdong Daily reported today.

The unrest escalated yesterday afternoon after rumors that children were beaten dead by the police were spread around. The mob attacked police stations, injuring dozens of police officers and smashing six cars.

The Lufeng government is still investigating the incident.
