Land official gets life for bribes, embezzling

THE former top land official of Nanchang, capital city of Jiangxi Province, has been jailed for life for taking nearly 6 million yuan (US$879,000) in bribes and embezzling another 1 million yuan of public funds.

Fuzhou City Intermediate People's Court handed over the verdict to Zhou Hongwei, former director of Nanchang Land and Resources Bureau, and confiscated all his personal property, the China News Service reported yesterday.

Zhou has appealed for a second trial to Jiangxi Province Higher People's Court.

Zhou was convicted of taking money from a businessman surnamed Xu from 2001 to 2009 to provide benefits in return during his tenure as the land official, the court said.

When director of the land bureau's suburban branch, he embezzled another 1 million yuan of public funds, the court added.

Zhou had returned 2.14 million yuan and the court is still trying to retrieve the rest money involved.
