Land official in SW China on trial on corruption charges

A former district land and resources bureau chief in Chongqing municipality stood trial yesterday charged with taking 14.2 million yuan (US$2.2 million) in bribes.
Yu Bo, who had served as the land and resources bureau chief in the high and new tech industrial development zone and Banan district, was accused of taking the bribes from 15 people, mainly real estate company managers, between 2003 and 2011, said a statement from the No. 5 Intermediate People's Court in Chongqing.
Yu denied some of the allegations during the court hearing.
The court said it will announce the verdict on another date.
Land officials in China, where land and housing prices had soared over the past years, are easy targets for corruption as their abuse of power can help property developers win land bids, and often securing plots at lower prices.
