Land official sentenced
THE family of a land administration official in southern China is appealing for public support after the official was sentenced to six months in jail for issuing a land-use license, under the orders of the city government, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.
He Yuntao, former deputy director of the Lianjiang Land Resources Bureau in Guangdong Province, was handed down the sentence for issuing the license to a developer who defaulted on payment for the land.
However, his family held a press conference yesterday, claiming that He was being made a scapegoat, and appealed for public support.
He refused to plead guilty, insisting "it was a government decision rather than my personal misconduct." He said he refused to issue the license several times but the city government had ordered him to do so.
The government declined to comment.
The Jindu Real Estate Investment Co bought two pieces of land through auction in April 2005 but failed to pay the 1.85 million yuan (US$284,345) land-use fees.
