Land protest ends in violence

POLICE in southern China dispersed more than 400 people gathered outside an industrial park after a demonstration turned violent.

The crowd was reported to be demonstrating over land disputes.

Officers dispersed rioters who burned and smashed vehicles and shops and clashed with security forces in Lufeng City in Guangdong Province on Wednesday afternoon, according to the official website of Shanwei City, which administers Lufeng.

At least four people were detained. No one was injured in the clashes, the website said.

Protests started around 9am on Wednesday when around 50 people gathered at a local cinema where they shouted and held placards demanding answers to land dispute issues. The crowd soon grew to more than 400 people, the website said. Some protesters massed at the gate of the Lufeng government building, while others blocked a bridge.

After city leaders came out to appease people's anger, the crowd began to leave.

However, police were dispatched when people started to gather again at around 1:30pm, smashing up a restaurant on their way to the industrial park, the website said.

The report did not say if police used force, but said local authorities used "effective measures" to disperse the crowds at 4:50pm.

Local government staff were sent to meet with residents and police investigations are continuing, reported the website.
