Landslide claims at least 10 victims

AT least 10 people died in a landslide early yesterday in northwestern China.

The landslide in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, involved 44 people. Rescuers last night were sifting through the rubble for 18 people still missing although the landslide continued. The 10 victims were among the 26 pulled out from the rubble by 6pm.

Six of the survivors were unhurt while 10 with minor injuries were sent to hospital immediately.

Three among the hospitalized were discharged. The others were stable without life-threatening injuries.

Many rescuers used bare hands instead of excavating machines to avoid hurting people who were buried, slowing down the rescue efforts, China National Radio said.

The accident scene was very narrow, adding to the rescuers' difficulties and making it hard to introduce excavators or other heavy machines, the report said.

Residents at Shuanghuyu Village of Zihou's Shuanghuyu Town were awakened at midnight by the noise of the slide involving 90,000 cubic meters of land.

Fifteen families were buried in the disaster.
