Laos Jeep sparks outcry
A JEEP with a Yunnan Province license plate and painted with the sign of an inspection team for agricultural authorities was spotted in Laos during the National Day holiday, stoking speculation that the government car was used for personal reasons.
A Chinese visitor discovered the vehicle in Vientiane, Laos, during the holiday and posted pictures on Weibo.com, a microblog service.
The pictures showed the muddy Jeep had the sign and Chinese characters for the inspection team of the local agricultural bureau. It quickly aroused criticism from the online community.
Irate microbloggers said they suspected the government vehicle was used by officials for private use.
"The officers were so diligent that they sacrificed their holiday and went overseas to do their jobs. Isn't this internationalism?" netizens said in a sarcastic tone. Others dubbed the mission a "cross-national law enforcement operation."
A microblogger called Wills Zhao said the picture explained why government expenditures for travel, car use and receptions remained stubbornly high.
The Bureau of Agriculture of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture confirmed the vehicle belonged to its inspection team, an official yesterday told the City Sun, a newspaper based in Shandong Province.
The unnamed official said an investigation had been launched after the pictures were exposed and the results would soon be announced to the public.
