Largest dog-poisoning-for-meat case in Zhejiang Province busted
ZHEJIANG Province's largest case of poisoning dogs for their meat has been cracked by police who said yesterday they arrested seven suspects believed to have produced more than 11 tons of dog meat sold in recent months in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
A prime suspect, surnamed Shi, had been operating the dog-poisoning and meat-selling business in Zhejiang for years, according to police.
Most of the dog meat was believed to have been used by restaurants.
Members of the underground ring arrested yesterday are suspected of selling the meat from stolen dogs that were poisoned.
The ring used sodium cyanide, a highly toxic chemical, to poison street and pet dogs, police said.
Police started the investigation following an outburst of dog theft reports by residents in Haining city.
In early July, police captured some food, wax balls and two dead dogs that were dumped by a dog thief after he escaped during a confrontation with police.
The case led to the crackdown of the underground ring.
An investigation showed the thieves sealed the poison in wax balls and stuffed them inside food such as duck and chicken meat to lure the dogs.
The stolen and poisoned dogs were taken to the home of one of the suspects, where there was a workshop used to slaughter and produce the dog meat before selling it.
The suspects would face charges of illegal production and selling of harmful and poisonous food, police said.
The investigation was still under way.
