Largest lottery winner turns up

THE winner of China's biggest lottery prize showed up yesterday morning to claim his 565 million yuan (US$88.5 million) fortune.

The man won two separate prizes - 514 million yuan and 51.4 million yuan - after buying tickets from a lottery outlet in Hangzhou City, capital of Zhejiang Province.

He showed up about a week after the provincial lottery office urged the mystery winner through the media to claim his prize before the 60-day deadline. He arrived on the 34th day, the longest period a claimant has delayed.

The self-employed businessman, described as no more than 40 years old, made an immediate charity donation of 20 million yuan - saving him 4 million yuan in lottery tax.

He ended up with 436 million yuan after paying 109 million yuan tax to the Hangzhou government.

Instead of the routine practice by previous lottery winners of giving money to the China Red Cross, the man made his donation to the civil affairs department of his hometown, Xinchang County, in Zhejiang's Shaoxing City, stipulating that it must be used to ease the lives of old people and children.

Media reports claimed his unusual choice of recipient could be related to the tarnished reputation of the China Red Cross. Many claim it has ties with commercial organizations and has misused donations.

His gift is also the largest from a lottery win in the country. The previous highest was 10.5 million yuan from a winner of 258 million yuan.

The man declined to be interviewed by the media but, in contrast with some previous big lottery winners, did not disguise himself when he collected his prize. He donned a helmet when asked for a photograph.

The lottery office in Hangzhou confirmed that the man walked into the office at about 9am without informing them beforehand. His claim was completed by 11:30am, officials said.
