Largest party in the world gets bigger
THE Communist Party of China now has more than 80 million members, a senior official said yesterday.
Wang Qinfeng, deputy head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, told a press conference that by the end of last year membership stood at 80.269 million.
Last year, 3.075 million people joined the world's largest political party - a net increase of 2.274 million taking into account members who had died or left.
College students and the group comprising industrial workers, farmers, herders and migrant workers each accounted for more than 40 percent of new members.
More than 21 million applications for membership were received in 2010, 861,000 more than 2009.
A total of 32,000 members were expelled or withdrew last year.
The Party continued to expand both in public and private sectors last year with organizations established in nearly all government agencies, state-owned and private enterprises, and social organizations, Wang said.
They were also set up in 99.9 percent of villages and urban communities and in all associations of lawyers and certified accountants.
