Last survivor in building collapse undergo amputation
A young woman who was the last survivor in a collapsed building in Fenghua City, east China’s Zhejiang Province had her left leg amputated this morning, China Central Television reported.
The woman identified as Shen Dailu suffers serious injuries due to burying in the debris for nine hours. Doctors carried out the amputation at around 7am, and she is still in critical condition, the report said.
Medical experts from Shanghai and Hangzhou will hold a consultation for her future recovery, said the report.
Shen’s grandmother was the only person being killed in collapse, which occurred 8:45am yesterday. Six survivors are being treated in hospital.
A team has been set up to investigate the cause of the collapse. The building had already been identified as dangerous during a citywide safety inspection conducted last year in the wake of Typhoon Fitow.
The probe resulted in the structure being reinforced, but it was not considered bad enough to merit an evacuation, said the local government.
