Latest Foxconn suicide
A WORKER has committed suicide at Foxconn Technology Group's south China manufacturing complex, the company said yesterday, the latest in a string of young migrant workers who have died at its factories this year.
A key manufacturer of iPhones and iPads for Apple and computer gadgets for other global brands such as Hewlett Packard and Dell, the company said the 23-year-old male employee was found dead early yesterday outside a dormitory in Shenzhen.
"The police are carrying out an investigation and Foxconn is cooperating fully with that process," it said in a statement. "We have expressed our condolences to the family of the deceased employee."
Labor rights groups say there have been at least 13 suicides at Foxconn's factories across Chinese mainland this year, not including the latest death. Many were young migrant workers, among the millions who leave the poor hinterlands for booming coastal factory towns.
The deaths have thrown a spotlight on the labor practices of Foxconn, which counts Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd and Foxconn International Holdings as its listed subsidiaries.
The company, which employs close to a million workers on Chinese mainland, has pledged to improve conditions, increase pay, reduce overtime hours and build factories in inland provinces such as Henan, allowing workers to live nearer home
