Lavish wedding leads to corruption arrest
PUBLIC anger over a lavish wedding banquet held by a senior court official in southwest China the day after the May 12 earthquake has led to his arrest for corruption.
Chen Peilin, 53, president of Zhanjiang District Court in Guangdong Province, was detained on February 6 and was arrested on February 13 for allegedly taking huge amounts in bribes, reported Xinhua news agency today.
The exact amount was not revealed.
A post on a Website last June accused Chen of holding an extravagant wedding ceremony to celebrate his third marriage with a doctor in her 20s a day after the devastating May 12 earthquake in China's southwest Sichuan Province in 2008.
The post said Chen spent at least 100,000 yuan (US$15,625) with 27 tables of guests, many of whom were local businessmen. Chen also received large amounts of cash as gifts.
Earlier that year, Chen gave his wife a Porsche worth about one million yuan and a new luxury house in Guangzhou Province, which cost over one million yuan to decorate, the report said.
The post stirred public uproar and Chen was later ordered to repay part of the wedding cash.
