Law catches up with gunman after 14 years
A GUNMAN who killed seven people and had plastic surgery to cover up his identity was finally caught by police 14 years after committing the crime.
The suspect, surnamed Luo, was escorted back to Mudanjiang City in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, where the shooting occurred in February 1997, after a neighbor recognized him in Beijing and tipped off his whereabouts to the police, www.dbw.cn, the province's new portal website, reported yesterday.
Luo, who worked as a security guard and retired from the Mudanjiang forestry bureau, suspected the bureau's Deputy Director Cheng Qiang caused his early retirement. Luo also had business disputes with the wife of his colleague Wang Ming.
On the fateful night, an inebriated Luo went to Wang's home carrying two guns. He opened fire on Wang and his son. Then he held Wang's wife at gunpoint and forced her to knock on the door of Cheng's home in the same building. There he shot Cheng, his wife, their child and Wang's wife.
Police investigation showed Luo fired 17 rounds, with the victims all shot in the head.
Luo robbed 1,000 yuan (US$152) from Cheng's home and fled the scene. He hijacked a taxi and threatened the driver to take him to Dunhua City in neighboring Jilin Province. On being refused, Luo killed the driver, too.
Luo then escaped to Shenzhen City in the south, where he made a fake ID card of Guangdong Province under the name Du Zhuan. He even had a double-eyelid slicing surgery to alter his identity.
Luo was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for robbery in Shenzhen in 2000 and was released in 2009.
An old neighbor ran into Luo in an elevator in Beijing in January this year. He recognized Luo and called police.
