Law professor in hot water over rape comments

A law professor's Internet post saying that "raping prostitutes rather than decent women makes it less harmful" brought a storm of criticism from the public and an ill-fated attempt by the professor to explain.
Yi Yanyou, deputy professor with renowned Tsinghua University, said he was commenting in relation to a sensational gang rape case involving the son of an influential singer.
Yi modified his words yesterday afternoon after his post on Weibo.com triggered outrage.
"Raping decent women is more harmful than raping bar girls, dancing hostesses and whores," he said.
But his revised version did not quell public anger.
Yi initially aimed to speak for two lawyers who tried to plead not guilty for their 17-year-old client, whose name was given by courts only as Li. He is the son of famous singer Li Shuangjiang, Xinhua reported.
Li and four others will stand on trial for gang raping a woman. Li told his parents that the woman was a bar girl and voluntarily agreed to have sex with them, media reported.
Yi tried to explain that "I don't mean that bar girls can be raped but they are more likely to agree to have sex."
He said the criticism was unjustified, adding, "Some online comments are so disgusting! I shouldn't expect the Internet to be a public platform for rational discussion."
Tian Canjun lawyer for the victim in the Li case, issued a statement saying she didn't understand Li's definition of "bar girls" and didn't accept the smearing of her client. The lawyer said Li couldn't hide behind his definition of "bar girls" as a shield, Tian said.
