Lawmaker faces court over mistress' suicide bid
A SENIOR lawmaker faces prosecution for an extra-marital affair that led to the young woman's suicide attempt after their baby died.
The lawmaker, surnamed Wu, has been removed from his post as vice dean of the Longwan District Committee of the Chinese People's Congress, the disciplinary supervision authority of Longwan District in Zhejiang Province's Wenzhou City told today's Oriental Morning Post.
The investigation was launched after an online post alleged that a vice dean of Longwan CPC kept a 21-year-old student as mistress. He allegedly pressed her to have an abortion when tests showed the baby was a girl.
The woman, surnamed Lu, refused to have an abortion and insisted on giving birth, but the baby died from malnutrition.
Lu then threatened to jump from the Longwan government building, exposing their relationship to the public.
A Longwan government worker confirmed to reporters that a young woman had threatened to jump from the government building last Tuesday after Wu refused to meet her after the baby's death. Building security guards managed to dissuade her suicide attempt.
Wu, 52, was promoted to the Longwan CPC vice dean in 2008, according to the unnamed government worker.
