Lawmakers vote to end labor camps
China’s top legislature yesterday voted to abolish its labor camps introduced more than half a century ago, saying they had served their purpose.
The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress also supported the easing of another decades-old policy — the one-child limit.
The Party had announced the long-sought changes among a series of pledges after a key plenary session in November.
The camps have become superfluous as the country’s legal system has developed, Xinhua news agency said.
Legislators also backed an easing of the one-child policy, which was imposed to prevent overpopulation. This would allow couples where either parent has no siblings to have two children.
