Lawsuit over poisonous tableware
MORE than 7.5 billion disposable plastic dinner boxes made from poisonous or dangerous materials are used in China every year – and a court is now prosecuting two Beijing restaurants for using them.
A Beijing court has accepted a lawsuit against two renowned restaurants for using the containers. The plaintiff Dong Jinshi, an official with the International Food Packaging Association, said it was his first step in waging a legal war against poisonous dinner boxes.
Dong said that chemical residue in the boxes the two restaurants gave him were about 150 times higher than the national standard. Instead of being made from pure polypropylene, unlawful producers reused waste plastics and ceresin wax, Dong said.
Ceresin wax dissolves in oil and vinegar and is a strong carcinogen that could affect people's digestive and nervous system, he said.
Dong said he has seen used tampons transformed into paper cups and shredded disks made into milk bottles.
