Lawyer sues his own clients over unpaid fee
A LAWYER in Chongqing is suing 51 college students who have not paid his fee after he helped them win a court case in which they received compensation for being given fake graduation certificates, Southern Metropolis reported yesterday.
The students claim they can't afford the fee.
Zhou Litai, a lawyer famous for helping vulnerable groups, was hired by 51 students of Shaanxi Yucai training college in May 2010 to sue the college for faking graduation certificates.
Zhou helped the students win the case - the court ordered the college to pay each student from 71,000 yuan (US$10,856) to 81,000 yuan in compensation. The verdict stated the college should pay in two installments.
According to the contract the students signed with Zhou, he was to receive 15 percent of the awarded compensation, the report said.
However, after the students received their first payment, they refused to pay their lawyer. Zhou sued the students for 625,350 yuan, the amount he was owed under the contract.
Xu Guoxi, one of the students who is now in Chongqing negotiating with Zhou, was quoted as saying: "Each of us had already wasted up to 90,000 yuan at the college, and the highest compensation we got is about 80,000 yuan. If he charges so much, we're still losing money."
Student Liu Bo said they were told the percentage could be worked out after the case.
Zhou told the newspaper he originally requested a fee of 5 percent, but the students raised it to ensure he would do his best to win the case.
