Lawyers held over claim of lies in court

FOUR lawyers representing four suspects from south China accused of killing a man and throwing his body into the sea are under investigation for allegedly inciting clients to lie in court.

Yang Zaixin and Yang Zonghan have been detained while Luo Sifang and Liang Wucheng are under house arrest, according to police in Beihai City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The lawyers represented suspects who stood trial on September 26 last year. Prosecutors said the suspects beat 17-year-old Huang Huanhai to death before dumping his body in the sea near a harbor in Beihai in November, 2009. The suspects pled not guilty, citing a lack of evidence.

Three witnesses, who were friends of the suspects, told the court the suspects stayed with them that day and couldn't have committed the crime.

But Beihai police said the suspects later admitted they had been persuaded by their lawyers to lie to investigators and the three witnesses were also being investigated for perjury.

There has been no verdict as yet in the ongoing murder trial.
