Lawyer's outburst after appeal sentence
A LAWYER convicted of faking evidence for his client, an alleged gang boss, said he was lured into pleading guilty on appeal because court officials promised him no jail time.
Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People's Court reduced Li Zhuang's jail term from 2.5 years to 18 months because of his good attitude during his appeal.
On hearing the sentence, Li shouted that he had been promised no jail time if he admitted the charges, Beijjng Evening News reported today.
He asked more than 160,000 registered Chinese lawyers to continue appealing against his case. Li will soon be disbarred, an official with Beijing's bar association said.
Li pleaded guilty to falsifying evidence and obstructing testimony shortly after his second trial began.
More than 20 lawyers earlier begged the court to transfer the case outside Chongqing to guarantee impartiality.
