Lawyers to swear oath of loyalty to the Party

NEW lawyers in China must swear loyalty to the country, the Communist Party and the public, the Ministry of Justice said yesterday.

A person who obtains a lawyer's practice certificate or regains the certificate should take the oath within three months after the date of getting the certificate, according to the ministry.

On its website it said that first-time applicants or lawyers requesting renewals of professional legal licenses must take the oath of loyalty which is intended to raise the political, moral and professional quality of the country's lawyers.

The oath includes upholding social justice, promoting righteousness, maintaining the Chinese constitution and laws, and striving for the cause of socialism, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I pledge to faithfully fulfill the sacred mission of a worker of the socialist system of laws with Chinese characteristics, be loyal to the homeland, loyal to the people, support the leadership of the Communist Party of China," part of the oath reads.

Xinhua said the ministry has also named institutions which organize the ceremonies as well as the time and ways in which a lawyer must take the loyalty vows.

In September 2010, the general offices of the Party's Central Committee and China's Cabinet said that oath-taking ceremonies would be an important step to further promote lawyers' integrity.

Early in 2000, the All China Lawyers Association proposed to hold oath-taking ceremonies for lawyers, but the proposal did not become reality, according to Xinhua.
