Lead: Officials punished

TEN government officials, including a county chief, have been punished over a lead pollution case which poisoned more than 200 children in east China's Anhui Province.

The chief of Huaining County in Anqing City and another eight officials received disciplinary punishment due to their lax supervision of the polluting factory. The chief engineer of Huaining's Environmental Protection Bureau has been transferred to judicial authorities for alleged crimes of dereliction of duty.

Three children from the Xinshan community in Gaohe Town were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood at the Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital on December 24. Subsequent checks on 280 children found that more than 200 had high levels of lead.

The children were discharged after their lead levels had dropped.

Borui Battery Co Ltd, which was separated with the community by a narrow river, was found releasing waste containing lead. The factory was ordered to shut down. Huaining County Public Security Bureau has launched further investigations into the factory.
