Lead poisoning found in villagers in Guangdong
AT least 37 children in Dongtang Township of southern Guangdong Province have been found to have high levels of lead in their blood. They are among the 69 villagers who had their blood tested recently, China News Service reported yesterday.
Three of the four granddaughters of a villager named Liu Hongdai had excessive amount of lead in their blood, more than twice the acceptable level, the report said.
A seven-year-old boy was the first one diagnosed of lead poisoning. He has suffered hair loss since last May.
Health authorities in Renhua County, which oversees Dongtang, have conducted a health check for all villagers in Dongtang Township and launched an investigation.
Local environmental watchdog has collected samples of air, soil, surface and underground water to trace the source of lead.
