Lead tests confirm 49 above safe level
HEALTH checks ordered by a county government in southwest China's Sichuan Province have found 47 children and 2 adults suffering from lead poisoning.
The checks in Longchang County covered 1,756 people living within 800 meters of a metal alloy factory. Residents had complained they had been poisoned by the pollution discharged by the factory, China News Service reported.
Checks are still going on, but already 49 people in four villages have been confirmed with blood lead levels higher than the national standard.
The county's environmental authority has sent samples of water, soil and vegetation near the factory to the Sichuan Provincial disease control and prevention center for further tests. It did not say whether the factory was responsible for the lead poisoning.
On February 25, a villager named Zhang Jiayou reported that his family was found to have elevated lead levels in regular medical tests.
The county government said they have begun to organize free treatment for patients. Doctors are to be sent to the villages to educate residents about lead poisoning.
A series of lead-poisoning cases across the country last year raised alarm about the damage done to the environment during the nation's rapid economic development.
Lead poisoning incidents in Henan, Shaanxi, Hunan and Yunnan provinces sickened thousands of children.
In Shaanxi, tests found 851 children living near China's biggest lead smelting base had been poisoned by lead.
