Leaders call for all-out efforts
CHINESE President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out measures to rescue victims and minimize casualties, after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern province of Sichuan yesterday morning.
Xi told officials to obtain information on the disaster speedily and make every possible rescue effort. Rescue work should be done in a scientific way in order to keep casualties to a minimum, he said.
Premier Li Keqiang traveled to Sichuan to direct work at the quake-zone.
He took a helicopter to the epicenter of Lushan County in Ya'an City and called a meeting in Longmen Township of Lushan.
As he traveled to the quake-hit area, Li listened to reports from relevant ministries and armed forces.
"The most urgent issue is grasping the first 24 hours after the quake, the golden time for saving lives, to take scientific rescue measures and save peoples' lives," Li said.
"Life is the most important thing. The top priority is saving lives," he added.
Li asked for the timely, accurate release of information on the disaster, relief work and deaths and injuries, in order to earn the public's confidence and reassure people.
The State Council, China's cabinet, has launched a top-level emergency response to the earthquake. Emergency teams from ministries, armed forces and police are heading to the quake zone.
