Leak threatens Qiandao Lake
A POND at an east China lead-zinc mine collapsed on Thursday morning, leaking waste water and metal residue near Qiandao Lake, a famous tourist attraction.
The recent heavy rain caused flooding in Chun'an County, Zhejiang Province and the torrents breached part of the pond wall. The leak had been sealed by yesterday morning, the Chun'an government said.
More than 6,000 cubic meters of mining residue was washed away. Some leached into local creeks that run into Qiandao Lake, renowned for its over 1,000 islands and clear, and sometimes drinkable, water.
Qiandao Lake is the source for many bottled water companies. Environmental experts said the waste had not reached Qiandao Lake's major water body and the lake's water was not contaminated so far.
Emergency workers are reinforcing the pond to prevent a further collapse.
