Learn from online criticism, says Xi

PRESIDENT Xi Jinping yesterday called on Party and government officials to use the Internet to better understand citizens and address their grievances.

Officials should be patient with Internet users, resolve their difficulties and correct erroneous opinions in a timely manner, Xi said.

Internet regulators should welcome and learn from constructive criticism online, whether it’s targeted at the Party and government or individual leaders, Xi told a symposium on Internet security yesterday. But he said that turmoil in cyberspace would not be in the people’s interest.

His comments echoed his words in December, when he said people should be able to speak freely online.

Better cyberspace management and a positive and healthy cyber culture will be good for everyone, Xi told the symposium.

A clean cyberspace with healthy dynamics is in the interests of all, while a “filthy and unhealthy” cybersphere serves no one, said Xi, who heads China’s central Internet security and informatization leading group.

China must improve cyberspace management and work to ensure high quality content, with positive voices creating a healthy, positive culture that is a force for good, he said.

He said cyberspace should be imbued with positive energy and resonate to mainstream ideology in the hope of creating a clean and righteous environment.

Xi called for coordinated development of cyberspace security as well as breakthroughs in core Internet technology.

“More personnel, material and financial resources should be put toward research and development of core and strategically important technologies,” Xi said.

He called on entrepreneurs, scholars, scientists and technicians in the industry to work together toward the goal.

“New technology is the achievement of civilization and we will never resist its development as long as it helps improve productivity and people’s lives,” Xi said.

Security is a prerequisite for Internet development, and development will also safeguard Internet security, Xi said as he urged accelerated development of a system to protect key information and ensure online security.

Xi said that securing the online environment was a responsibility for all society, requiring commitment from the government, enterprises, social organizations and all citizens.

Premier Li Keqiang, central bank chief Zhou Xiaochuan, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd Executive Chairman Jack Ma and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd Chairman Ren Zhengfei attended yesterday’s meeting.
