Learner drivers to be excused school
A PILOT program to allow people to take the driving test without going to driving school is to be launched next year, the State Council said yesterday.
Currently, driving school attendance is mandatory before a new driver can sit the test.
Under the pilot program, people will be allowed to learn from a relative, friend or anyone who meets certain criteria.
However, before they venture out onto the road, learners will need a “learning certificate” from the police and their cars will need to be equipped with safety features, such as the dual controls used by driving schools.
China has more than 13,000 driving schools and 750,000 instructors. More than 30 million people take lessons every year and demand for lessons is increasing, the Ministry of Public Security said.
Liu Zhao, director of the ministry’s traffic management bureau, said it was aiming to make the test fairer and simplify procedures.
