Legislator, mayor in the dock on graft charges
A SENIOR legislator in south China's Guangdong Province is being probed for graft, local Party disciplinary watchdog said yesterday.
Li Zhujiang, 59, deputy secretary-general of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong People's Congress, has been accused of abusing his power and taking "extremely huge" bribes when he was the head of the province's maritime and fishery bureau from 2000 to 2009.
He was removed from his post and expelled from the Party for indiscipline. All the ill-gotten wealth has been confiscated, and his case has been transferred to the judicial department.
The Guangzhou Daily reported that Li was placed under investigation on April 27. Rumor has it that his unlawful activities came to light during the illegal construction of a luxury villa in Shenzhen, dubbed "Palace on the Sea." The villa, a private club, did not get a license and was lying vacant for eight years since 2003. Local media claimed that Li asked the local authorities to stop the investigation against the villa.
Elsewhere, a city mayor in Guizhou Province is also under investigation for taking bribes to the tune of 9 million yuan (US$1.467 million), besides two kilograms of gold.
Wang Shujun, 43, was named mayor of Anshun City on April 23, corruption allegations were posted online on July 1. Lu Xuanjie, who worked for a real estate company, alleged that he gave Wang 1 million yuan in cash to win approval for a 30 million yuan development loan.
