Legislator pushes for locally made computers
MOST government bodies and national banks of China are using computers made by IBM or Hewlett-Packard that poses potential risks, a local national legislator said yesterday.
Feng Jun, general manager of the Shanghai Electric Power Co, said they have to rely on foreign suppliers for the maintenance of the computers and accessories, while the core codes of the computers are also inaccessible to the nation.
Most of the country’s power suppliers, telecommunication network and banks, including the People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank, are using IBM or HP computers.
“If they break down or lead to some leakages, it will cause serious problems,” Feng said.
He asked the central government to set up a special fund to shift to homemade Inspur computers and operational systems than just rely on the US computer makers.
Currently, only the Chinese military uses the Inspur computers and systems to ensure full security, but most other government bodies and other institutes are still using foreign branded computers and the Microsoft windows system.
