Leniency on man who pulls off wife's respirator

A MAN who killed his ailing wife by removing her respirator was sentenced to three years with a three-year reprieve for murder yesterday in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.

The 37-year-old husband, Wen Yuzhang, whose entire hair turned white, cried and claimed he acted "out of his love for his wife" when the Intermediate People's Court of Shenzhen City handed down the verdict yesterday.

The court said it gave the sentence, the minimum for a murder charge, as it "sympathized with Wen's desperate choice to end the life of his beloved wife, also the mother of his two children," Guangzhou Daily reported today.

However, the family of his wife, Hu Jing, were enraged and said they couldn't accept the "unreasonable leniency." Hu's mother claimed Wen had a mistress surnamed Zhang, and was afraid her daughter would divorce him to split their properties. She said Wen had deemed Hu as "a burden to shake off."
The family will receive 1.28 million yuan (US$192,459) as compensation from Wen, the court ordered.

Wen's wife, Hu Jing, suddenly fell down at home on February 9 last year and had remained unconscious. Doctors said Hu suffered brain damage which led to disability to breathe and had to rely on respirator and other medical pipes. Hu received treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Shenzhen No. 2 People's Hospital.

On February 16, Wen suddenly jumped to remove the patient's reparatory and pipes. Some nurses tried to stop him and reconnect the device but were forced away as Wen threw himself upon his wife's body.

Wen claimed he must give up treatment because his wife suffered too much.

Hu was pronounced dead from respiratory arrest one hour after the removal, Guangzhou Daily said.
