Lenient punishment for woman who drowned twin sons

THE woman who attempted suicide after drowning her twin sons with cerebral palsy in a south China city was sentenced to five years in prison for murder this morning.

Han Qunfeng drowned her 13-year-old twin sons in the bathtub of their home in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, before drinking a mixture of pesticides to kill herself on November 20 last year. Han was later saved at the hospital, according to the Dongguan No. 1 People's Court.

The court showed leniency to Han because she had a "complicated family background and motive," said the judge.

Han told the court that she had lost all hope after caring for her disabled children for 13 years. The twins were born premature and suffered brain damage in childbirth, according to the local news portal Timedg.com.

Han's husband said the family was the brink of bankruptcy after spending all the money on the twins' treatment and they saw no sign of recovery. Their plight has aroused great sympathy from neighbors who wrote a letter to the court pleading for mercy for the poor woman.
