The trial, held in private as four juveniles were involved, began at the Haidian District People’s Court on Wednesday.

Li and four others were charged with assaulting and raping a 23-year-old woman, surnamed Yang, at a Beijing hotel on February 17.

The court said three suspects issued apologies yesterday, and that some defendants said they would offer compensation.

She is reported to be in hospital suffering the effects of psychological pressure.

Zhao Yuanheng, lawyer for a defendant surnamed Zhang, said his client had written an apology to Yang before the trial and was willing to pay 100,000 yuan compensation.

Li Zaike, lawyer for two cousins surnamed Wei, said some of the accused had attempted but failed to have sex with Yang.

A 23-year-old defendant surnamed Wang said he paid for sex, Beijing News reported.
