Liaoning police bust 'Mafia' gang led by a local lawmaker

A Mafia-style gang in northeastern Liaoning Province was destroyed and its leader who was a deputy to Anshan City People's Congress was arrested along with 109 gang members, the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.

Yuan Chengjia, 45, owned a mining company in Anshan and allegedly amassed a fortune of more than 2 billion yuan (US$314 million) after he formed the Mafia-like gang in 2002, the ministry said.

He and his gang are charged with disturbing social order and causing two deaths and inflicting injuries on 45 people. Police have seized ten guns, 41 bullets and 13 banned knives from the gang, the ministry said.

Armed with the criminal gang, Yuan controlled the local mining business and entertainment venues, expanded into the real estate sector, and suppressed his competitors by force, the People's Daily reported today.

The close-knit gang served as the teeth and claws of Yuan's company and enabled him make large sums of money illegally, the report said.
