Life for cult member who killed child
A member of an illegal cult has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a girl who suffered from a mental illness.
The woman, surnamed Xu, was a member of the Quannengshen sect, Modern Express reported yesterday.
The 30-something was found guilty at the Jiangsu High People’s Court of strangling to death the girl, surnamed Guan, early last year.
Guan, whose age was not given, was a classmate of Xu’s daughter and was staying at Xu’s house at the time.
Xu had persuaded Guan that she could help her with her mental problems and had convinced her to stop taking her prescription medicine. As a result of not taking the drugs, Guan began showing symptoms of her condition.
Believing the girl to be possessed, Xu decided she had to die, the court heard.
In the presence of her son and daughter, and another of the girls’ classmates, Xu hit Guan over the head with a stool and began strangling her.
She then told her children to strangle Guan with a rope and ordered the other child to hold her down, the report said.
Guan died at the scene and Xu was arrested soon after.
Xu was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay Guan’s family 22,000 yuan (US$3,500), the report said.
