A DRIVER who killed five people and injured four others under the influence of alcohol was jailed for life today for endangering public security.
Zhang Mingbao slammed into a crowded pavement in Nanjing on June 30, killing five bystanders including a seven-month pregnant woman, Nanjing Intermediate People's Court heard.
Zhang's blood alcohol level was nearly five times the legal limit when tested after the accident, according to the court.
Zhang's wife Liu Fengxia said the family has managed to pay 3 million yuan (US$439,400) in compensation to the victims. Jiangning District Government paid the compensation to the victims and their families on his behalf last month
The report did not say whether the 43-year old driver will appeal. Families of the victims vowed earlier to seek the death penalty.
Zhang confessed in court that he drank two bottles of white wine at a restaurant on the night of the accident. But just 130 meters away he lost control of his car and mounted a crowded pavement.
