Life for former official known as '30 million Huang'
A FORMER top government official in east China's Shandong Province was jailed for life yesterday for taking more than 12.23 million yuan (US$1.94 million) in bribes during his tenure from 1998 to 2011.
Huang Sheng took the bribes from 21 companies and individuals when he was the mayor of Dezhou City and, later, the province's vice governor, a court in Nanjing said.
Huang had admitted the charges and the money had been recovered, the court added.
He became vice governor of Shandong in 2007 but was removed from his post and investigated in late 2011.
Huang, 59, had accrued so much money that he was known as "30 million Huang." Media reports said Huang even put a price on some government official positions, ranging from 50,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan.
Several officials who worked with Huang in Dezhou are said to have stepped down amid corruption allegations since 2009.
Huang's wife, Yan Qinzi, who is in the real estate and construction business, was said to have taken advantage of her husband's position, a violation of the central government's strictures on relatives of top government officials running businesses.
There were online rumors that Yan had emigrated to Canada when the investigation into her husband began, but there has been no official confirmation.
A person close to the Shandong government was quoted by a Chinese newspaper as saying that the case was exposed due to a female relative in Shanghai who had set up a shell company to handle construction projects in Dezhou.
Previous media reports also said that Huang had sought sex services and bribes during official visits and personal tours to different cities and towns.
