Life jail for official on bribes of US$1.95m

A FORMER county Party secretary in Henan Province has been sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting 1,575 bribes worth 13 million yuan (US$1.95 million), the Legal Weekly reported yesterday.

The Luoyang City Intermediate People's Court said that from mid 2002 to early last year, Li Yinkui, who had been county chief and county Party secretary of Fengqiu County of the central China province, took advantage of his positions to accept 1,575 bribes from 142 people, including town officials and county bureau directors, to make profits for others.

The bribes included 12.76 million yuan, US$8,000 and 8,000 euros (US$11,090).

To make a show that he was honest, Li even submitted 639,800 yuan in cash to the "clean account," which is set up by the government for officials to hand in cash gift they could hardly refuse.

Li aroused suspicion at the end of 2008 because he harbored a chemical factory that was a heavy polluter.

Li has lodged an appeal against the verdict.
