Life sentence for corrupt land and resources official

A Ministry of Land and Resources official was given a life sentence and deprived of his properties for taking bribes totaling more than 8 million yuan (US$1.25 million).

Sha Zhigang, 46, former director of the ministry's Monitoring & Statistics Division, abused his power to assist Beijing Taoyuan Science & Technology Company and Beijing Tianmu Innovative Science Company to win project bids, and he accepted 8.4 million yuan in return from these two companies.

Jia Xun, the founder of Taoyuan Science & Technology Company, confessed to police that he and Sha used to be classmates. He founded the company in 2004 and Sha helped him to win project bids between 2005 and 2009. He offered Sha 65 percent of the company's profit in return.

Police said Sha had passed classified information to Jia before the open bidding for China's second national land survey.

Police said about 6.33 million yuan of Sha's illegal income has not been recovered and investigation is ongoing.
